Comprehensive eye exams by a doctor of optometry are an important part of caring for your eyes, vision, and overall health. Periodic eye and vision examinations are an important part of preventive health care. Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms, so you might not know a problem exists.
Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems can help prevent vision loss. Each patient's signs and symptoms, along with your doctor of optometry's professional judgment, will determine what tests are conducted. A comprehensive adult eye and vision examination may include but is not limited to patient history, visual acuity, preliminary tests, keratometry/topography, refraction, eye focusing, eye teaming, eye movement testing, eye health evaluation and supplemental testing.
Nowadays, most people prefer to wear contacts instead of glasses. If you are interested in contact lenses, please let your eye doctor know prior to your appointment. During your exam, we will discuss the various contact lenses available and determine the best option based on your individual needs and lifestyle. The standard of care is single use lenses. They are contacts you wear for one day and then throw them away. You do not need to save them or use contact lens solution with them.
Here at Eldred Eye Center we specialize in hard to fit contact lens cases. We fit both Scleral and Rigid Gas Permeable contact lenes for a variety of corneal issues. We will discuss with you the best options for visual needs and take the time to make sure your fit is comfortable and your vision is as good as it can be.
A diabetic eye exam is an important part of your diabetic care. We will work with you and your endocrinologist to manage your diabetes. We will be looking at the health of your eyes for diabetic retinopathy and neovascularization of the iris. Having diabetes can also increase your risk of developing other eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts.
Age-related macular degeneration or AMD is the leading cause of adult blindness in developed countries and affects nearly 1 in 8 adults over the age of 60. AMD is a chronic, progressive disease that attacks the macula, a part of the retina that allows us to see objects located straight ahead of us. The macula is responsible for your central vision, which allows you to do things like recognize faces, read, and watch TV.
Cataracts cause a clouding of the lens in the eye, making your vision appear to be foggy. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and are the leading cause of blindness in the world.
Glaucoma occurs from damage to the eye’s optic nerve and can often lead to loss of vision and blindness. To detect glaucoma, our highly trained doctors will perform a proper screening to determine severity, examine the damage, and help you manage your glaucoma.
Computer Vision is a relatively new term within the optometry field and refers to eye problems associated with the prolonged use of computers and electronics that utilize a digital screen. Although it can be temporary, there are times when computer vision can strain the eyes to a degree that permanently affects your vision as well.
If you are interested in laser surgery or cataract surgery, we will begin with a comprehensive eye examination, which will let us know more about you and your needs. We may have to perform some testing to properly diagnose your eye conditions. During this time, the surgeon and staff will go over what you can expect before, during and after the procedure; we want to make sure to give you realistic answers for your unique vision.
